Course Overview

As dementia cases continue to rise globally, it is critical that health and social care professionals are well-equipped with both the knowledge and compassionate understanding needed to provide person-centred care. This training is built on the principles of ethics, excellence, and engagement and is aligned with the values set out in the Dementia Learning and Development Framework for Wales.

Facilitated by Dr. Nistor Becia, MBE, this practical and reflective course is ideal for professionals working in direct care, support, or clinical decision-making roles. The session helps participants understand not only the clinical nature of dementia, but also its lived experience — empowering them to deliver truly respectful, responsive, and strengths-based care.

What is Dementia?
Understand the neurological, psychological, and social foundations of dementia, including types such as Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, Lewy body, and young onset dementia.

Effective Communication and Personhood
Learn communication strategies that respect each person’s reality and individuality — with an emphasis on maintaining dignity, identity, and meaningful relationships.

Legal, Ethical and Human Rights Frameworks
Overview of legislation including the Mental Capacity Act, Equality Act, and the Human Rights Act — and what they mean in everyday practice.

Recognising Risk, Abuse, and Safeguarding
Develop confidence in identifying and responding to signs of abuse or neglect and applying positive risk-taking principles safely.

Emotional Impact and Wellbeing
Explore the emotional experience of a dementia diagnosis, the carer journey, and how to provide holistic, psychosocial support.

Promoting Meaningful Living
Understand the value of life story work, creative engagement, and everyday routines in supporting cognitive, emotional, and relational well-being.

About the Facilitator

Dr. Nistor Becia, MBE is a Chartered Psychologist with over 17 years of experience in the UK mental health sector. Having worked across community and inpatient settings, and in both clinical and leadership roles, he brings a deep understanding of dementia care. Dr. Becia is known for his person-centred, trauma-informed approach and was awarded an MBE for his contributions to mental health and well-being in the UK.
